Erik ten Hag’s Future in Question After United’s FA Cup Win

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United triumphed over Manchester City in an FA Cup final over two weeks ago, an event pundits touted as potentially his last game. After the surprise victory, United reviewed the season but there’s still no decision on the Dutchman’s future. Before the game, pundits and fans speculated about Ten Hag’s job security, suggesting potential dismissal regardless of the outcome. They linked this uncertainty to United’s poor season, their worst since 1989-90, when Sir Alex Ferguson was under pressure.

Ten Hag maintained his stance, mentioning in an interview in the Netherlands that new co-owners Ineos had informed him about their intention to rebuild the club “with me.” Ten Hag’s assessment seemed exaggerated, reflecting earlier conversations with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Sir Dave Brailsford and Jason Wilcox. In reality, United had committed to a comprehensive review at the season’s end with the manager’s fate being part of it. Despite expectations for a quick decision after defeating City, the 54-year-old emphasized his commitment to winning.

Erik ten Hag went on holiday, while United’s hierarchy started the season-end review, delaying the manager’s decision. Contrary to expectations of a swift resolution, United sources clarified that they had not set a timeline for the review. As we enter the third week, no announcement seems imminent. In the meantime, Ten Hag can only wait, reiterating his desire to manage United, where he still has a year left on his contract. Various names have surfaced as potential successors including Kieran McKenna, Gareth Southgate, Graham Potter and Thomas Frank.

Reports surfaced that Thomas Tuchel met Ratcliffe in Monaco, indicating interest, although United hasn’t confirmed the meeting. Similarly, interest in Mauricio Pochettino has waned since his Chelsea exit. With United’s players on break or international duty, there’s no immediate pressure to make a decision. However, the spotlight remains on Old Trafford with uncertainty prevailing over Ten Hag’s future and potential managerial appointments.
