Harry Kane Sees Iceland Defeat as Crucial Wake-Up Call

Harry Kane, the captain, views England’s 1-0 defeat to Iceland at Wembley on Friday as a potential “wake-up call” ahead of Euro 2024. Despite being one of the tournament favorites, England faced boos after a lackluster performance in their final warm-up match. Kane, who netted 36 Bundesliga goals in his debut season with Bayern Munich, acknowledged the need for improvement before the Euros kick off in Germany on Friday. “There will be some noise about the loss to Iceland, but the fans are optimistic, and rightly so,” said the 30-year-old. “Ultimately, it’s up to us to perform on the pitch.”

He believes the defeat could remind everyone that success won’t come easily. “This could be a wake-up call for everyone to understand that it’s not going to be as easy as people think. There’s a lot of work to do,” Kane added. Despite the loss, Harry Kane felt England, featuring Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, were unfortunate not to score multiple times against Iceland. “We need to improve in some areas, no doubt,” he said. “It was one of those games.

On another day, we could have scored three or four clear-cut chances, as both Cole and Ant, as well as myself, all had good opportunities. We could have left the game with a 3-1 or 4-1 win, feeling much better heading into the Euros.” England will start their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on Sunday, June 16, in Gelsenkirchen.
