Slovakia Deals Belgium First Loss Despite Lukaku’s Efforts

Slovakia caused one of the biggest upsets in European Championship history by defeating Belgium, despite the latter having opportunities to prevent it. Belgium, ranked third globally, were favorites to lead Group E but now find themselves playing catch-up due to a disappointing performance in Frankfurt and a controversial refereeing decision labeled “scandalous.”

During the match, Belgium squandered several chances with Romelu Lukaku missing multiple opportunities and VAR disallowing two goals he scored. The first disallowed goal was clearly offside but the second decision, involving a handball by Lois Openda, sparked more debate. The substitute appeared to inadvertently control the ball with his arm while in motion, leading to a contentious ruling out of the goal.

Following the match, emotions ran high as Belgium’s frustrations were compounded by Ivan Schranz capitalizing on a defensive error by Jeremy Doku to secure Slovakia hard-earned 1-0 victory. Belgium’s failure to convert from 47 consecutive major tournament shots, coupled with missed opportunities reminiscent of their 1980 Euros performance, left manager Domenico Tedesco reflecting on the unexpected loss.

Despite the setback, Tedesco acknowledged Slovakia’s spirited performance and expressed disappointment in his team’s inability to capitalize on their 16 scoring opportunities. The defeat marked Belgium’s first loss in 15 matches under Tedesco’s management and highlighted their vulnerability despite their superior FIFA ranking.

Looking ahead, Belgium faces a critical match against Romania in Cologne, aiming to recover from their early tournament setback and avoid another premature exit.
