Portugal Manager Urges Tighter Security

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez expressed concern about fans invading the pitch to take selfies with players after his team’s 3-0 victory over Turkey at Euro 2024. During the match in Dortmund, five individuals reached the pitch in attempts to photograph Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, causing frustration among players and spectators. Security at Westfalenstadion chased down each intruder.

Martinez acknowledged the good intentions of fans wanting to meet their idols but emphasized the potential dangers and the need for improved security. “We all appreciate fans who admire the big stars,” he said. “However, if their intentions are not good, it becomes a difficult situation. This shouldn’t happen, and it could get worse. Players shouldn’t be so exposed on the pitch.”

A young boy was the first pitch invader and Ronaldo hugged him and took a photo with him. Ronaldo became visibly irritated when a third person attempted a selfie as Portugal prepared to defend a second-half corner. Security intervened. At the end of the match, Ronaldo pushed away a fifth supporter, and security escorted him off.

Portugal teammate Bernardo Silva downplayed the incidents, expressing more annoyance at the interruptions than concern for safety. “It’s just a bit annoying to stop the game because a fan enters the pitch,” he said. “That’s the price of having a globally recognized player like Ronaldo on the team, but I don’t feel in danger.”

BBC Radio 5 Live’s senior football reporter Ian Dennis criticized the stadium’s security, noting that officials would need to improve it ahead of hosting a semi-final. UEFA’s disciplinary body awaits reports from officials before deciding on any further action.
