Alan Hansen enjoyed a 14-year tenure at Liverpool.
Liverpool legend Alan Hansen has been discharged from the hospital following a period of illness, as confirmed by his former club. Messages of support poured in after Liverpool announced on 9 June that the 69-year-old was seriously ill. A family statement on the club’s website on Sunday expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support stating that Hansen will now continue his recovery at home while also requesting privacy.
During his illustrious 14-year tenure with Liverpool, Hansen amassed a remarkable record, securing eight First Division titles, three European Cups, and two FA Cups between the 1970s and 1980s. He remains among Liverpool’s top 10 players for all-time appearances having played 620 matches and won a total of 17 major trophies during a highly successful era for the club.
Hansen, who earned 26 caps for Scotland, began his senior career with Partick Thistle before joining Liverpool in 1977. He served as captain for four seasons before retiring in 1991. Following his playing career, Hansen transitioned to punditry, becoming a fixture on BBC’s Match of the Day from 1992 to 2014.
Reacting to the news, Hansen’s former Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker tweeted, “The best news ever.” Ahead of Scotland’s Euro 2024 match against Hungary, Alan Shearer shared his relief, stating, “Great news that he’s out and hopefully feeling better. His timing is perfect, just in time to watch his team.”
