Glasgow Emerges as Last Resort Candidate for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Glasgow is being considered as a potential host for the 2026 Commonwealth Games but it’s seen as the last option due to challenges surrounding the event. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is reviewing various proposals amid ongoing uncertainty about the Games’ future.

Recently, Singapore and Malaysia ruled out bids while Victoria, Australia, withdrew as host in July due to escalating costs. If bids from outside the UK fail, Scotland has a backup plan to host a scaled-down version of the Games.

Glasgow which hosted the event in 2014 would reuse facilities like the Emirates Arena along with existing accommodation options. Instead of the 20 sports featured in Birmingham in 2022, the event would include 10 to 13 disciplines resulting in cost savings.

This plan aims to avoid public spending with the CGF and commercial income covering the estimated budget of £130-150 million. A final decision on Glasgow offer is expected by the end of May.
