England manager Gareth Southgate observed midfielder Jordan Henderson’s debut for Ajax in a 1-1 draw against Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven. Henderson (33) joined Ajax in January after a brief stint at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.
His debut was delayed due to work permit issues but he played the full match on Saturday. Despite Luuk de Jong’s goal for PSV, Henderson expressed his excitement about representing Ajax and playing at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
He was unaware of Southgate’s presence until before the game and hoped the England manager enjoyed the match. Southgate had continued to select Henderson for the national team even after his move to Saudi Arabia despite some criticism from fans.
Henderson’s move to Ajax was influenced by his desire to stay in Southgate’s plans for the upcoming European Championship.
