Liberty Media the owner of Formula 1 has acquired MotoGP from Dorna Sports in a deal worth £3.6 billion. Liberty will hold approximately 86% of Dorna with the management retaining the remaining shares. The transaction is set to be finalized by the end of the year.
Greg Maffei, Liberty Media CEO expressed excitement about expanding their sports portfolio with MotoGP citing its global fan base and financial potential. Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta praised Liberty track record in sports development and highlighted MotoGP growth and value.
MotoGP which began in 1949 has evolved into a 20 races season spanning five continents. Currently, Spanish rider Jorge Martin leads the championship with 60 points followed by Brad Binder of South Africa with 42 points.
