Marseille’s Aubameyang Makes History as Europa League’s Top Scorer

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has achieved the status of the Europa League’s all time leading goal scorer matching the record set by Radamel Falcao. The former Arsenal captain and Chelsea player scored the opening goal in Olympique Marseille’s 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk. Despite the historic moment, Marseille faces a challenging second leg in their play-off tie.

Aubameyang (34) has accumulated 30 goals in the Europa League throughout his career playing for Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona and Marseille. This record excludes goals scored before the competition was rebranded from the UEFA Cup. Henrik Larsson remains the overall top scorer if those goals are included with 31 just one ahead of Aubameyang, Falcao and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Aubameyang has experienced a resurgence in form at Marseille scoring 15 goals in 31 games during his debut season. His time at Arsenal ended with a captaincy dispute leading to a move to Barcelona before a brief and unsuccessful stint at Chelsea.
