Masters Day 1: DeChambeau Leads, Scheffler Shines, Willett Returns

Bryson DeChambeau holds a one-stroke lead over Scottie Scheffler following a storm-shortened first day at the Masters. DeChambeau finished the day at seven under par while Scheffler the world number one impressed with a bogey-free 66. England 2016 Masters champion, Danny Willett playing his first tournament since September 2023 due to injury sits four strokes under par. Rory McIlroy posted a 71 and defending champion Jon Rahm carded a one-over 73. Tiger Woods among 27 players whose rounds were cut short by darkness finished at one under par before play was halted.

The round will resume at 07:50 local time (12:50 BST) with the second round starting at 08:00. Woods who has battled injuries expects a quick turnaround between rounds. DeChambeau strong start included three consecutive birdies while Scheffler showcased skillful play, highlighted by a chip-in birdie from a bunker. Ryan Fox had a stellar front nine but faltered on the back nine finishing four strokes behind the leader. Despite challenging wind conditions, Nicolai Hojgaard and Max Homa performed well both reaching five under par and four under par, respectively before play was suspended.

Scheffler a favorite after recent wins remains a contender as McIlroy aims for his first Masters title. DeChambeau known for his power game made strategic plays to lead the field. Willett return to competition after a shorter-than-expected recovery from injury was impressive. Among UK players, Willett, McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood all made promising starts.
