John Sterling the iconic radio voice of the New York Yankees has announced his retirement at the age of 85. Sterling who spent 36 years with the Yankees out of his 64 years broadcasting career will be honored with a ceremony at Yankee Stadium. While recent health issues had limited his travel with the team, his decision to retire came as a surprise to many.
Sterling known for his distinctive home run calls and trademark catchphrase “theeeeeeeee Yankees win!”, called over 5,400 regular-season games and 211 playoff games. His colorful style and passionate delivery endeared him to fans and he became a pop-culture figure particularly on social media. The Yankees praised Sterling for his contributions to the organization and his unique broadcasting style.
Prior to joining the Yankees, Sterling had broadcasted for various other sports teams including the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, New Jersey Nets and New York Islanders.
