NFL Competition Committee Proposes Major Rule Overhaul to Enhance Player Safety and Game Dynamics

The NFL competition committee has proposed significant rule changes including a revamped kickoff resembling the XFL alignment and a prohibition on the hip-drop tackling technique. The proposed kickoff rule aims to increase return rates while reducing concussion rates by moving players downfield.

Touchbacks would be marked at the 35-yard line and surprise onside kicks would be banned. The committee also aims to eliminate hip-drop tackles deemed dangerous by penalizing defenders who swivel and drop their hips to trap a runner’s legs.

Additionally, the committee proposed adding reviewable plays and expanding rules against crackback blocks. Teams would also be allowed to use a practice squad quarterback as an emergency No. 3 quarterback. These proposals come amidst ongoing efforts to enhance player safety and game integrity.
