Manchester United has reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries in a swap deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Despite initial concerns about Wan-Bissaka’s status under Erik ten Hag, the right-back has become a regular starter. The club recently extended Wan-Bissaka’s contract until 2025, showcasing their confidence in him. The rejection of the swap deal marks a shift from Ten Hag’s previous interest in Dumfries. The Dutchman was a key player for Inter last season, reaching the Champions League final.
However, contract negotiations and wage cuts have created tension between Dumfries and Inter. Financial Fair Play regulations and prior spending limit United’s transfer activities this month. Accepting the swap deal would have meant a significant loss for United who signed Wan-Bissaka for £50 million in 2019. Wan-Bissaka, despite criticism for his attacking contributions has been a consistent performer. The report also mentions Wan-Bissaka’s eligibility to switch national allegiance to Congo having yet to make a senior appearance for England.
