Rory McIlroy’s Ambitious Vision: A Formula 1-Style Schedule For Global Golf

Rory McIlroy reveals his vision for a “world tour” in golf amid ongoing discussions to unite the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund, backers of LIV Golf. The future of golf remains uncertain as talks continue. McIlroy envisions a global tour with increased events in Australia, South Africa, and Japan, emphasizing the exploration of untapped commercial opportunities.

Speaking from Dubai as he kicks off his 2024 season at the Dubai Invitational, McIlroy emphasizes the need for top-quality venues in the consideration of the future golf landscape. He envisions a world tour that involves corporate America and Saudi Arabia while tapping into international markets.

McIlroy advocates for giving elevated statuses to events like the Australian Open and South African Open, highlighting the quality of courses and local interest. He envisions a global tour resembling the Formula 1 schedule, with events in places like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.

The golfer suggests a 22-event schedule, creating an attractive calendar for the top players. Reflecting on the ongoing merger talks, McIlroy acknowledges the complexity but expresses his detachment from the political aspects, having stepped back from the PGA Tour’s policy board.

As he embarks on the 2024 season, McIlroy, a four-time major winner, remains focused on ending his 10-year major drought. Despite a successful 2023, including winning the Race to Dubai, he sees capturing a major title as the final piece of the puzzle in his illustrious career.
