Sir Alex Ferguson has played a role in making history as Caldwell Potter becomes the most expensive National Hunt horse ever sold at a public auction. Ferguson along with associates Ged Mason, Peter Done, and John Hales secured the classy novice hurdler for £634,000 at Tattersalls Ireland with bloodstock agent Antony Bromley handling the final bid.
Trained by Gordon Elliott and prepared for the Cheltenham Festival, Caldwell Potter’s sale to Ferguson’s team deals a significant blow to Elliott who hoped to retain the talented gelding in his yard. The horse’s acquisition by Ferguson and his group marks a boost for British racing with Caldwell Potter set to join Paul Nicholls’ stable in Ditcheat, Somerset.
Despite this triumph, Ferguson experienced the downside of National Hunt racing with the loss of Hermes Allen a co-owned novice chaser who tragically fell during a race at Sandown.
