Teen Sensation Joao Fonseca Makes History with ATP Win at Rio Open

Seventeen years old Joao Fonseca made history by becoming the first player born in 2006 to win an ATP tour-level match at the Rio Open. The Brazilian defeated seventh-seeded Arthur Fils with a commanding 6-0, 6-4 victory earning break points in six of Fils’ eight service games.

Fonseca ranked No. 655 is expected to jump around 200 positions after this win. The teenager who won the US Open boys singles title last year expressed his desire to focus on the pro tour and reaching the top. Fonseca is yet to decide whether he will play tennis for an American university later this year.

He will face Christian Garin of Chile in the round of 16 at the Rio Open. Sky Sports has confirmed extensive tennis coverage including over 4,000 matches from more than 80 tournaments annually on the ATP and WTA Tours along with exclusive live coverage of the US Open.
