After 11 years on tour, 29 years old Australian Jordan Thompson secured his first ATP Tour title in Los Cabos, Mexico defeating Casper Ruud in straight sets. Thompson ranked a career-high No 40 is expected to rise to No 32 after this victory.
In the semifinal, he beat world No 6 Alexander Zverev in a 3 hours 42 minutes match. Despite facing challenges including a quarterfinal comeback from 0-6, 0-3, Thompson showcased his skills particularly at the net. He closed out the final in a tiebreak expressing gratitude for his unexpected triumph.
Thompson had a strong start to the year reaching the Brisbane semi-finals and consecutive quarterfinals in Dallas and Delray Beach. Casper Ruud aiming for his 11th tour title lost to Thompson but had defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinal.
Thompson and Ruud also competed in the doubles semi-finals leaving Thompson with the chance to achieve a singles and doubles title double at the same ATP Tour event a feat last accomplished by Nick Kyrgios in 2022.
