The Turkish Super Lig plans to bring in foreign Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for crucial matches until the season’s end amid accusations of bias. Fenerbahce president alleged manipulation of match outcomes by an “underground network” in Turkey. Fined £98,450 for staging a walkout during the Super Cup against Galatasaray, Fenerbahce voiced dissatisfaction with domestic refereeing and unsuccessfully sought a foreign referee for the fixture.
Following incidents including an attack on Fenerbahce players by Trabzonspor fans, a club vote opted to remain in the Super Lig. Galatasaray currently holds a two points lead over Fenerbahce in the title race. To ensure fairness, both clubs’ upcoming matches will have foreign VAR officials from Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal.
