After a disappointing first half against Crystal Palace questions arose about whether Chelsea’s recent good performance against Aston Villa was just another false dawn. Despite a consistent starting lineup which has been a rarity for manager Mauricio Pochettino this season due to injuries, Chelsea struggled in the first half.
However, Pochettino’s halftime substitutions including bringing on Christopher Nkunku transformed the game. Playing two up front with two number 10s resulted in a much improved second half with Cole Palmer providing two assists.
The team showed unity and determination securing a deserved victory. While tougher challenges against Manchester City and Liverpool await, Pochettino may be getting a better understanding of his team’s strengths.
