Conor McGregor has competed in only four bouts since 2016.
Conor McGregor has expressed that pulling out of his fight against Michael Chandler on June 29 was a difficult decision. The UFC officially announced Conor McGregor’s withdrawal from the welterweight bout scheduled for UFC 303, citing an injury as the reason for his absence. McGregor’s injury necessitated his decision to pull out of the fight, marking a setback in his eagerly awaited return to the octagon.
In a statement on Instagram, McGregor, 35 acknowledged the disappointment of postponing his return to the octagon. He revealed an injury sustained before the press conference required more recovery time than available. McGregor emphasized that the decision was made in consultation with his doctors, the UFC and his team to ensure he returns at his best for the fight.
This marks McGregor’s first withdrawal from a UFC fight due to injury in his career. Since breaking his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, McGregor has not competed. Initially set to headline UFC 303, McGregor has been replaced by light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira. Pereira will now face Jiri Prochazka in the new main event on short notice.
The McGregor-Chandler matchup announced on May 24 saw tickets sell out in under 10 minutes. Despite the postponement, the anticipated bout between Ian Garry and Michael ‘Venom’ Page remains on the UFC 303 card.
