Bangladesh Defeats Netherlands in T20 World Cup Thriller

Bangladesh took a significant stride towards qualifying for the T20 World Cup Super 8s by defeating the Netherlands by 25 runs in St Vincent. Shakib Al Hasan played a crucial role, smashing an unbeaten 64 off 46 balls to steer his team to a total of 159 after an early setback to Aryan Dutt’s bowling. Initially, the Dutch maintained a competitive run-rate, with Vikram Singh hitting three sixes in a spirited 26 before getting stumped by Litton Das.

However, young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain turned the tide in the 15th over by dismissing Sybrand Engelbrecht and Bas de Leede, restricting the Netherlands to 111-5. The Dutch managed only 23 runs in the final five overs. This victory propels Bangladesh two points ahead of their opponents in Group D. A win against Nepal on Monday (01:30 BST) will secure their spot in the next round.

Conversely, the Dutch must rely on Bangladesh losing to Nepal and secure a substantial run-rate advantage over bottom-placed Sri Lanka. Shakib, in a return to form, entered the match after Bangladesh lost Das early, bringing stability with a partnership alongside Mahmudullah and later accelerating with Jaker Ali. His late surge, contributing 29 runs from the final 15 balls, added excitement to the match, marking St Vincent’s first international game in nearly a decade.

On the bowling front, despite conceding consecutive sixes to Singh, the experienced Shakib bounced back to finish with economical figures of 0-29 from his four overs. Nonetheless, it was 21-year-old spinner Rishad who shone brightest, dismantling Dutch hopes with key wickets and a sharp caught-and-bowled dismissal of Logan van Beek.
