Rashid Khan Leads Afghanistan to T20 World Cup Semi-Finals

Rashid Khan describes Afghanistan’s qualification for the T20 World Cup semi-finals as “like a dream.” Their victory in a low-scoring thriller against Bangladesh secured their place in the last four of an ICC global tournament for the first time, while also eliminating Australia from the competition.

“It’s unbelievable,” Rashid remarked. “Everyone back home is ecstatic. Being in a semi-final feels like a dream.”

Afghanistan’s ascent has been extraordinary since becoming an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2001. They achieved Full Member status in 2017. Now, seven years later, they will compete for a spot in their first final against South Africa in Trinidad on Thursday (01:30 BST).

“We had to push ourselves for the people back home, for their happiness, and to make the country proud,” added Rashid, 25. “It’s a massive celebration back home now, I’m sure. This is a big achievement for us. I’m thrilled with our team’s performance. We need to approach the semi-final with a clear mind, keep things simple, and enjoy the moment.”

Rashid played a pivotal role in the win over Bangladesh, hitting three sixes in a crucial late innings to lift Afghanistan to 115-5. He then took 4-23 with the ball, maintaining their defense of a low total. The match remained tense, with Bangladesh on the brink of victory, but fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq’s two wickets in two balls secured Afghanistan’s win.

“We have worked so hard over the last few years for this moment,” said Naveen, who finished with figures of 4-26. “Seeing it come true is surreal. I’m lost for words.”

The second semi-final will feature India against defending champions England in Guyana on Thursday afternoon (15:30 BST).
