The Memorial Tournament: Scheffler Leads After Triple Bogey

The Memorial Tournament, world number one Scottie Scheffler surged to a four-shot lead after enduring a mid-round triple bogey. The 27-year-old Texan, who led overnight, initially seemed steady, going two under through eight holes. However, a wayward tee shot on the par-four ninth led to a triple bogey, erasing his three-shot advantage. Despite the setback, Scheffler regathered his focus, securing a birdie on the next hole. He closed the round with a one-under-par 71, including two additional birdies and a bogey on the 18th.

Reflecting on the ninth hole, Scheffler admitted frustration but maintained confidence in his game, stating, “I feel like I hadn’t hit many shots at all off line and I was all of a sudden one over par. I was definitely frustrated with the break, but overall I was like, I’m still swinging it really good, I didn’t need to change anything, I just need to stay in the right frame of mind.” The two-time Masters champion aims for his fifth victory of the year, sitting at 10 under heading into Sunday’s final round at Muirfield Village in Ohio.

He leads by four shots over Canada’s Adam Hadwin, American Colin Morikawa and Austrian Sepp Straka. Morikawa and Straka posted bogey-free four-under-par 68s, joining first-round leader Hadwin in joint second at six under after his 72. US PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg share fifth place at four under. The Memorial Tournament, boasting a 73-player field, offers a $20 million purse, serving as a precursor to next week’s US Open at Pinehurst.
