New Zealand Rugby Players Threaten Breakaway Governance

New Zealand Rugby Players Association (NZRPA) has warned of potential separation from the governing body if NZR fails to meet their demands. This places the country’s rugby landscape on the brink of internal conflict. Numerous current and former All Blacks have endorsed a letter dispatched to New Zealand Rugby members ahead of a special general meeting on May 30. Some provincial unions submitted the proposal addressed in this letter. The acceptance of a NZ$200m deal with Silver Lake triggered the review into NZR governance, which the proposal follows.

The outcome of the review, which declares the governance structure as ‘not fit for purpose’, has prompted calls for sweeping changes. However, certain provincial unions have countered with a proposal that the players consider unacceptable. The NZRPA warns of a breakaway scenario if Proposal 2, as suggested by some unions, or the status quo is maintained. In this scenario, professional players would no longer entrust NZR with governance rights.

Instead, player-appointed directors would oversee professional game matters within a new governing body tentatively named ‘The Professional Rugby Tribunal’. This body would take on the responsibility of governance previously held by NZR. Notable figures such as Richie McCaw, Sam Cane and Sarah Hirini are among those advocating for this stance. The players emphasize their commitment to safeguarding professional players’ interests and development. They assert that they will take action if Proposal 2 is implemented, despite their preference for unity.
