Djokovic Triumphs Over Herbert in Roland Garros Opener

Djokovic solidified his French Open title defense with a win against local favorite Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The 37-year-old Serbian elevated his game to secure a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory in Tuesday’s night session at Roland Garros. With 24 Grand Slam titles, Novak Djokovic is on the brink of history, poised to claim the record for most major titles with a fourth victory on the Parisian clay. Despite uncertainty surrounding his form, Djokovic endured a turbulent season, prompting him to play in Geneva last week to regain rhythm and confidence before the French Open.

Although Djokovic’s baseline movement occasionally seemed uncomfortable and his returning lacked sharpness, he served well and capitalized on crucial moments, notably dominating the tie-break. Celebrating demonstratively upon clinching the two-set lead, Djokovic intensified pressure in the final game, leading to Herbert’s double fault at match point. Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his start and felt positive about his direction, particularly compared to recent tournaments.

He now faces Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, ranked 63rd in the second round. Meanwhile, Herbert’s match against Djokovic was overshadowed by a personal triumph. His baby son, Leandre, underwent a 10-hour pancreatic surgery in April due to congenital hyperinsulinism, a genetic disorder causing high insulin levels. Herbert’s revelation of Leandre’s successful recovery touched the tennis community. Herbert’s journey garnered immense support, perhaps providing him with additional strength against Djokovic.

Despite ultimately conceding victory, Herbert’s resilience coupled with the fervent backing of Parisian fans made for a poignant moment on the court.
