Emma Raducanu Defies ‘Insane’ Line Calls in Nottingham Opener

Emma Raducanu kicked off her grass-court season with a win at the Nottingham Open, despite facing what she described as “insane” line calls against her. The 21-year-old Briton defeated Japan’s Ena Shibahara 6-1 6-4 in her first match since April, opting out of the French Open to focus on her fitness. Raducanu expressed frustration, feeling like she was “playing two v one” against Shibahara and umpire Ana Carvalho, especially with no electronic line-calling technology in use at the Nottingham tournament. Raducanu’s remarks came after fellow Briton Harriet Dart’s dispute with the umpire over incorrect line calls in her match the previous day.

Despite the challenges, Emma Raducanu maintained her composure, stating, “It is difficult when there is no challenge, but it is something everyone has to deal with.” She emphasized her satisfaction with overcoming adversity and praised her attitude on the court. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) responded, highlighting their “highly trained workforce” of umpires and plans to implement electronic line-calling for ATP Tour-Level events starting in 2025. Raducanu’s victory marked her return to grass after 713 days, following surgeries in 2023. She demonstrated her intent early on, breaking Shibahara in the opening game and dominating the first set.

Despite some setbacks in the second set, Raducanu sealed the win, advancing to the second round where she will face Daria Snigur. Fran Jones also secured a victory, defeating Caroline Dolehide and will meet Ashlyn Krueger in the next round. Top seed Ons Jabeur defeated Camila Osorio and will face Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova next.
